AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WEAPONS.

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to identify psychological variables which might be used to degrade performance. This paper is divided into four sections. Section I is an introduction. Section II contains a review of the literature relevant to certain variables which have been found to improve performance. It was felt that if one could identify the variables and procedures which improve performance, it would be possible to degrade performance by either removing that variable or misusing it. The variables discussed are: knowledge of results, inhibition and disinhibition, perceptual distortion, spatial and temporal uncertainty, the development of incompatible responses, reinforcement, and expectancy and set. While anxiety and stress and certain physiological states are mentioned, there is no discussion of these variables in the present paper, although it is indicated that the use of such variables could indeed degrade performance.
