INVESTIGATIONS OF HIGH-POWER BEAM PLASMA INTERACTIONS.

Abstract

This research is directed toward the investigation of high-power beam plasma interactions, with specific investigation of the transverse velocity beam modes called for. The theoretical study of warm plasma waves excited by a frequency near the second harmonic has nearly been completed; a modified form of Buchsbaum and Hasegawa's electrostatic field equation has been solved for the ac currents and potential which satisfy the macroscopic boundary conditions of zero particle current at an insulated wall. An experiment to evaluate the predictions of unstable growing waves on electron beams immersed in a magnetic field with anisotropic velocity distributions has been initiated and has provided evidence of such an instability. The vacuum station for the two-beam experiment has been completed.
