Abstract

Glass-fiber plastics (GFP) are examined as a construction material for load-bearing parts which the author calls shells. GFP's are found to compete with other structural materials very satisfactorily. GFP is defined as a combination of glass fibers and plastics in which the plastics predominate, whereas the intrinsic carrier material is glass fiber. Various combinations of the two basic components are described and investigations with different aircraft structural elements are discussed. Most of the investigations deal with an equally divided force flow in relatively thin-walled laminates of glass fibers and plastics of various types and from different manufacturers. The influence of structure on strength and rigidity is studied and the tensile strength of laminates of various glass fabrics as a function of load direction is calculated. An example of a force-originating point is illustrated in reference to the connection of a frame structure of steel tubes to a truncated cone-shaped GFP shell. The author makes several proposals for the stress analysis of laminates. This article is the text of a lecture given at the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the Polytechnical Institute in Budapest.
