IMMERSION MEDIA FOR LIQUID GATES IN COHERENT OPTICAL PROCESSING.
Abstract
The use of refractive-index matching liquids in coherent optical data processing systems is briefly described, as is the use of these liquids for fabricating transparent plates with spatially varying phase retardation characteristics. Various criteria for choosing the liquids are given and the procedure used for gathering and correlating the data is described. A list of 413 commercially available organic and organometallic liquids is given. These liquids are tabulated in the following five orders: (1) alphabetically in a list which gives refractive index, boiling point, density, and approximate cost per 100 g; (2) by increasing refractive index including synonyms for the various liquids; (3) by increasing refractive index alone; (4) by increasing boiling point; and (5) by increasing density. Liquids currently used for coherent data processing applications are also noted. (Author)
