DISTORTION DUE TO SPACE-CHARGE FORCES IN MAGNETICALLY-CONSTRAINED ELECTRON SHEET BEAMS

Abstract

A general analysis system is described for use in connection with the study of data consisting of large numbers of observations (tens or hundreds of thousands of cases), each observation containing many partially interrelated items of information (parameters). The combined effects of many independent parameters on any one dependent parameter are studied under the condition that interaction effects among the dependent parameters may constitute an important aspect of the observations. The system is developed in connection with the study of many years of hourly weather records and provides for the use of all archived data relevant to a local area from a net work of hourly aviation reports, radiosonde reports and twenty four hour summary reports. Data are combined in space and time to form meaningful derived parameters. As the entire data sample is scanned, derived and raw parameters are categorized separately for each of a whole set of studies, occurrences of category combinations are totalled and the results are tabulated as sets of multi-dimensional conditional discrete frequency distributions. All necessary details are provided for the operation of the IBM 7094 and IBM 7044 computer programs written to implement the analysis system. (Author)
