APPLICATION OF REACTION RATE ANALYSIS TO THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMERS.

Abstract

Tensile strength data for five thermoplastics (phenoxy, polycarbonate, polymethylmethacrylate, polyethylene, and ethyl cellulose) was analyzed according to a modified rate equation. The agreement of the test results with the behavior described by the equation was excellent. Treatment of this type may be used to predict behavior of polymers from limited test data. Moreover, this treatment yields a set of parameters of the material. It may be possible to relate these parameters to the molecular properties involved in the failure process, thus forming a basis for a generalization on polymer behavior. (Author)
