BEARING ANALYSIS, SNAP 50/SPUR PROGRAM. THRUST BEARING HYDRODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE STUDY.

Abstract

The method of laminar and turbulent performance analysis presented in Topical Report Bearing Analysis for the SPUR Turbogenerator, was applied to thrust bearing pads of general surface contour. The analysis was also extended to include externally pressurized lubricant feed sources for compressible and incompressible lubricants. The influence of the turbulent mixing length constant is discussed, and the utilization of experimental friction results to determine its magnitude is outlined. The analysis is applied to two potassium test bearing configurations, and performance data is presented. The general computer program flow diagram is included, and the required input to handle various pad surface contours is discussed. The computer program input format is described, and sample input sheets are included. Also presented is a discussion of the required thrust bearing follow-on work that should be undertaken to extend the generalization of the analysis.
