HIGH PERFORMANCE FUEL CELL.

Abstract

During this reporting period, work was performed on system analysis and design, fuel cell stack design, electrolyte matrix research, and development of fabrication processes for thin, lightweight magnesium cell plates. Work was also done on breadboard-type fuel cell stack fabrication, and design and fabrication of test apparatus. An analysis of the Thermal Control Subsystem indicates that coolant pumping power requirements of 50 watts are feasible. Various materials, including Ceria oxide-Teflon, potassium titanate fibers and porous TFE were obtained and specifications prepared for electrolyte matrix research. Experiments were performed on methods of bonding two thin magnesium plates to form a combination oxygen distribution and coolant plate for use in the fuel cell stack. Studies and experiments on other aspects of plate design and fabrication were also performed, and a reference fuel cell stack design was developed. Fabrication of initial four-cell section fuel cell stacks and associated test apparatus was performed.
