OPTIMUM COHERENT OPTICAL RECEIVER TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

The evaluation of the high-frequency image dissector has been continued during this period. The heterodyne experiment conducted during this period on the optical test range successfully demonstrated coherent detection with the breadboard optical receiver operating in the tracking mode. The tracking system pointing accuracy was demonstrated to be approximately 20 arc seconds. The characteristics of the crossed-field electron multiplier as a detector of extremely short optical pulses were investigated in a parallel effort in the laboratory. The time-resolved output of a phase-locked helium-neon gas laser and a phase-locked Nd:YAG solid-state laser were observed. The estimated rise time of the crossed-field electron multiplier is approximately 0.5 nanoseconds. (Author)
