NONRADIATIVE PROCESSES IN OPTICAL MASER MATERIALS.

Abstract

Far-infrared lattice absorption studies of the cubic CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2, and CdF2 are described. The absorption beyond 60 microns is strongly temperature-dependent, and the materials at 4.2 K become transparent for lambda greater than 80 microns. The bulk absorption losses, in fact, are low enough in this range to permit laser operation.
