SYMMETRICAL CHARGE EXCHANGE AND ION-ATOM TRANSFER REACTIONS.

Abstract

Application of the ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) spectrometer to an investigation of symmetrical charge exchange and ion-atom transfer reactions in atmospheric gases is reported. Experimental results for total collision cross sections are summarized, along with the analytical equations used to convert collision frequencies to ion mobilities and ion-molecule collision cross sections. Several new approaches for applying ICR techniques to measure absolute ion molecule reaction rates and electron photodetachment in negative ions are outlined.
