RESEARCH ON NEW TECHNIQUES IN ABSORPTION AND EMISSION SPECTROSCOPY.
Abstract
A newly designed demountable hollow cathode has been used to study the emission and absorption spectrum of triethyl phosphate. The emission spectra were found to be much steadier than those obtained using previous designs. Numerous strong emission lines were observed in the wavelength range 2700 to 2000 A. Strong absorption by triethyl phosphate of an emission line at 2535 A was observed when the hollow cathode described above was used as the source. The absorption of radiation at the same wavelength from a hydrogen lamp continuum was much weaker. This indicated line-on-line absorption by the triethyl phosphate. Absorption of the same line by other organic compounds was examined. Early indications are that aromatic compounds absorbed, but the other compounds examined did not. An rf plasma has been installed and operated successfully. Various gases have been introduced into the plasma and their emission spectra recorded. These gases include argon, helium, nitrogen, air, and triethyl phosphate. (Author)
