THE EFFECT OF APPLIED MAGNETIC FIELDS UPON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF STEELS.

Abstract

A comprehensive survey of the literature dealing with magnetic and thermomagnetic treatment of metals was completed. Of major practical importance were claims of magnetic fields effecting substantial changes in: Mechanical properties; crystallographic textures; and the transformation of austenite to martensite in iron base alloys. Tensile tests and microstructural observations revealed no significant changes in a range of steels subjected to various combined thermal and DC magnetic treatments. It was also found that the time of exposure in and type and magnitude of an applied magnetic field had no apparent effect on the austenite to martensite transformation in two tool steels; nor were the mechanical properties of these tool steels enhanced by the magnetic treatment as claimed by other investigators. On the basis of the evaluation of the literature and the current experimental investigation, it is concluded that the application of magnetic fields of up to 25,000 gauss DC and 2,200 gauss AC offer no great promise of significantly simplifying the heat treatment or altering the mechanical properties of conventional steels.
