MARINE CORPS PACK XM 1964. ARMY FIELD PACK, COMBAT M1961 (MODIFIED) FEASIBILITY STUDY.
Abstract
This report constitutes the final test and evaluation of the Marine Corps Pack XM 1964 in response to the requirements set forth in USMC internal project directive 42-65-03 to evaluate the suitability of the MCP XM 1964, small arms pouch and associated load carrying items as replacements for the standard Marine Corps M1941 load carrying system. Troop test reports indicate that the MCP XM 1964 with modifications is suitable for use by the Marine Corps. Annex B to this report indicates the desired modifications that have been incorporated in the prototype load carrying system. In addition, the use of nylon material in the fabrication of any load carrying system is also recommended for use. It is recommended that the MCP XM 1964 with modifications indicated be adopted for Marine Corps use. A concurrent evaluation is included relating to the feasibility of replacing the standard Marine Corps knapsack with the Army Field Pack M1961 (mod.) and, also, to provide, thereby, for a separate pack for special use. This report establishes that the Army Pack M1961 (mod.) is suitable for use by the Marine Corps as a replacement for the standard Marine Corps knapsack and is compatible with either the standard Marine Corps haversack or the MCP XM 1964 (mod.). Additional modifications are required of the MCP XM 1964 to provide compatibility and these are outlined in Annex C to this report. It is recommended that the MCP XM 1964 (mod.) and the Army Field Pack M1961 (mod.) are suitable for Marine Corps use and do represent the most versatile and modernized pack system to be employed by the Marine Corps to date.
