PLASMA PROPERTIES OF SELECTED ELECTROMAGNETIC WINDOW MATERIALS.

Abstract

Pyrolitic boron nitride and slip-cast fused silica, materials used in reentry vehicle windows that are transparent to electromagnetic signals, are studied for their effects upon the plasma sheath surrounding a reentry vehicle. Ionized specie concentrations have been calculated for electromagnetic window material and air mixtures, using a modification of the JPL thermochemical equilibrium computer program. The results of this study indicate that the ionization of these ablating window materials is comparable to or exceeds the ionization produced by ablating heat-shield materials. (Author)
