INVESTIGATION OF BONDING IN OXIDE-FIBER (WHISKER) REINFORCED METALS.

Abstract

Factors affecting the wetting and bonding of nickel to sapphire (alpha-Al2O3) have been investigated in a continuing study. In this report, covering a period from July 18, 1966 to October 18, 1966, the effects of trace additives to pure Ni on the chemical interactions between molten Ni and Al2O3 were studied in detail. The additives consisted of approximately 0.1 and 0.01 atomic percent Cr, Ti and Zr. Electron microprobe analyses showed that each additive had a distinct, but pronounced effect on the microstructure of the Ni-Al2O3 interface. All of the Ni samples reacted chemically to some extent with the Al2O3 substrate, but the Zr-containing specimens had by far the most deleterious effects. (Author)
