GEODETIC METHODS APPLIED TO ACOUSTIC POSITIONING.
Abstract
When large scale bathymetric charting operations are conducted beyond the range of electronic positioning systems, some means of controlling the horizontal positioning of the surveying vessel must be made available. Acoustic transponders implanted on the ocean bottom, by the survey ship, are employed to enable a solution to the positioning problem. A method for calibrating an acoustic network array is presented and an example is presented where this method was used with real data. Once the array is calibrated (i.e. the stations are oriented three dimensionally) it may be used first for relative positioning, and finally it may be used for geodetic positioning when referenced to a satellite positioning system.
