REFRACTORY MATERIAL STANDARDS.

Abstract

Four standards of BeO containing the same impurities in approximately the same concentration ranges as the Brush BBOX Standards have been prepared. The composition of the standards has been verified by spectrographic and, in some instances, by wet chemical methods. The base oxides used in the preparation of six sets of standards previously delivered to the Air Force under Contract AF 33(615)-1701 have been analyzed. Spectrographic techniques have been developed for the determination of a number of impurity elements down to the level of 1 ppm or less. For the determination of impurities in certain refractory materials (Ta2O5, SiO2, CeO2, WSi2, TiB2, HfB2, ZrB2, TaB2, TiC, HfC, ZrC, TaC, TiN, ZrN, and BN), spectrographic techniques have been developed and applied to the original compounds, and, where practical, after preliminary conversions to oxides. Wherever feasible, other instrumental techniques, as well as wet chemical methods, have been employed in the analytical program.
