A NOTE ON TENSILE TESTING AT HIGH STRAIN RATES

Abstract

The response of an elastic uniaxial tension specimen to a constant velocity applied at one end is presented. The application to the problem of testing specimens with high rate testing machines where the velocity of the ram approaches the dilational wave velocity of the material is discussed. The concept of high strain rates is shown to break down under high loading rates.
