FUEL CELL SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT IN EUROPE.

Abstract

As fuel cell technology matures toward usable power sources, more European companies are shifting emphasis from basic research to systems development. It is the purpose of this report to highlight this shift and to discuss modules + systems being built. Not every company with relevant development effort could be included, but those visited present a good cross-section and include major participants in this effort. Virtually all systems being developed employ basic electrolytes with H2 and O2 electrodes at low or slightly elevated temperatures. Almost all high-temperature systems development has been terminated or relegated to exploratory research. This report includes reviews on fuel cell development at ASEA, Sweden, Varta Gmbh, Germany, Compagnie Generale d'Electricite de France, Energy Conversion, Ltd., UK, and work at the Admiralty Materials Laboratory, UK.
