REAL TIME DIGITAL PHASE SHIFTERS UTILIZING 4-PORT SINGLE-JUNCTION LATCHING CIRCULATORS.

Abstract

The devices under development are real time delay digital phase shifters utilizing 4-port single-junction waveguide latching circulators. A design change for the time delay equalizer element is suggested based on free space wavelength time delay. Phase linearity of the composite delay equalizer is discussed, and preliminary data are presented on the phase characteristics of one of the C-band circulator designs. Geometrical and ferrimagnetic material variations of the circulator toroid elements were investigated. Some progress has been made in shifting operation of the X-band unit into the desired band and in improving the VSWR match for the C-band unit through changes in the toroid design. Further attention was given to VSWR matching and switching wire coupling problems. The C-band high power test setup is described. Initial high power tests to 20 kw peak were made with a nonoptimum C-band unit. Arcing observed at this power level appeared to be related to the switching wire. Hysteresis properties of several toroid elements were measured and compared. Initial data on electronic driver performance is presented. (Author)
