REFLECTOR ANTENNA ZOOM TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

This is the second quarterly report, and covers the period 23 Sep through 23 Dec 66. During that period, far-field patterns were calculated in sin theta and theta space, and contour plots in sin theta space. These patterns were for grid No. 2, developed during the first quarter of the program. The computer program written during the first quarter was revised so that delta patterns are plotted at a level relative to the sum pattern peak. This was accomplished by summing the aperture power and then readjusting the elemental excitation levels to set the aperture power equal to a constant. Final aperture excitation contours were determined for the Sum, Delta, and Widened beam modes, and evaluation was accomplished based on acceptable levels for side lobes in the far-field patterns. An investigation of candidate array elements was undertaken during this quarter: those studied were: horns, slow wave structures, lens and feed, reflector and feed, and arrays of small radiators. As a result of the study, the conical horn and circular broadside array were selected as offering advantages over the other types of radiators: further theoretical and experimental investigations will be made of the two.
