HEAT POWERED AIR CONDITIONER FEASIBILITY STUDY.

Abstract

This report considers a new cycle in refrigerating environmental control systems. It is heat-actuated, being suitable for operation with either hot exhaust gases similar to those discharged from turbo-generator devices or the hot flue gases from combustible liquid fuels. Extended studies based on both analytical and experimental results indicate that the concept is feasible and, in advanced models, promises the possibility of a new family of military environmental control systems which both heat and cool over realistic world-wide climate environments. An engineering model delivered under the contract demonstrates the feasibility of the system. The engineering model is the first of its type and was built in the main from off-the-shelf items in order to simplify and shorten the program. Its performance is consistent with that which was anticipated and the experience gained in the design of this unit has provided a firm base upon which to foresee the nature of future models. The design properties of a family of systems is presented that vary in capacity to satisfy any field application requiring from one to twenty tons of refrigeration and 30,000 to 600,000 BTUH of heating.
