FIELD TESTING OF PROPELLANTS.
Abstract
During the final quarter of this program, Phase II - which is concerned with the design and fabrication of the model field test kits - was completed. Three model field kits were designed and fabricated, namely: (1) Oxidizer Field Test Kit for determining NO in N2O4/NO(90/10) propellant, (2) Constant Current Coulometric Field Test Kit for determining N2H4/UDMH in 50/50 N2H4/UDMH and (3) Water-In-Fuel Field Test Kit for determining H2O in 50/50 N2H4/UDMH. During this report period, Phase III of the program was initiated. The work in this phase includes the testing and evaluation of the model field test kits. A preliminary evaluation of the Oxidizer Field Test Kit was completed using laboratory prepared N2O4/NO mixtures. The data obtained were compared to results obtained by the specification procedure (analysis by O2 reaction) and showed good agreement. The calibration and evaluation of the Constant Current Coulometric Field Test Kit were completed. Standard N2H4/UDMH samples which had been analyzed by gas chromatography were used. The operating parameters have been established and the instruction manual has been written. The Water-In-Fuel Field Test Kit has been calibrated and evaluated with water-N2H4/UDMH mixtures. The instruction manual and finalized drawings have been prepared. The field kits have demonstrated the required accuracy to indicate departure from the specification of a usable propellant and conformity to the criteria which were established for field usage.
