LOW PRESSURE EXPERIMENTS WITH THE MAGNETOPLASMADYNAMIC THRUSTOR USING ARGON AS THE PROPELLANT.

Abstract

The report presents the results of an investigation into the acceleration mechanisms of the magnetoplasmadynamic thrustor. The thrust and voltage were obtained for various anode locations and geometries. The voltage was found to be insensitive to anode location, but the thrust was strongly influenced. An external magnetic field was used and was found to be essential for thrust to exist. Above 800 gauss, however, the engine was no longer influenced by increasing the field strength. (Author)
