HYDROLYTIC STABILITY OF FERRIC CHLORIDE END-CAPPED PHOSPHONITRILE POLYMERS.

Abstract

Linear phosphonitrile chloride polymers and end-capped with metal halides have the capability for use as high temperature fluids; however they lack hydrolytic stability. This report covers studies of the hydrolytic instability of these polymer systems. Hydrochloric acid is evolved when these polymers react with water, and this acid was titrated to determine the extent of hydrolytic decomposition with various amounts of water. Only those polymers end-capped with ferric chloride were investigated. Results show the decomposition is first order, depending only on the amount of water added. The polymers are shown to be sensitive to trace amounts of water present in commercial-grade oil pumped nitrogen which was used as the carrier gas in this work. (Author)
