PLANE SHOCK WAVES IN METALS AND HETEROGENEOUS MATERIALS.
Abstract
A reasonable model for the strength of a metal which has been shocked is given. Then the experiments and the equations necessary to determine the state of the metal behind a shock front, in terms of this model, are given. The difficulties inherent in predicting a metal's Hugoniot, and in predicting the work hardening produced in a metal by a plane shock wave and the following plane rarefaction wave, are discussed. For geometrically simple heterogeneous materials, the geometric dispersion produced in the shock zone is shown to be amenable to study with hydrodynamic codes. Therefore, it may be possible to determine the Hugoniots and the adiabats of these simple heterogeneous materials numerically. (Author)
