MAINTENANCE-FREE SILVER-CADMIUM BATTERIES FOR AIRCRAFT EMERGENCY APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

The prototype 22-AH cells have been evaluated for discharge capacity over the temperature range between -30 and +130 F. This evaluation included currents between the nominal C rate (22 amps) and 200 amps. Results of this study show that the battery yields desirable discharge characteristics over the entire temperature range for the nominal C rate and almost equally good characteristics at the 50 amp rate. At higher rates, voltage dips are observed at the initiation of discharge. The dip becomes increasingly severe with increased currents and decreased temperature. Based on the cell parameters, a battery of 20 cells would yield better than 10 V for all current densities measured for temperatures down to 0 F. At -30 F, a 20-cell equivalent unit could deliver 10V at current densities as high as 180 amps. It is expected, however, that the 20-cell unit would self heat at a greater rate and would, therefore, yield good discharge voltages over the entire range of temperatures and current densities.
