OBSERVATIONS OF THE SOLAR PARTICLE EVENT OF 5 TO 12 FEBRUARY 1965 WITH MARINER IV AND INJUN IV,
Abstract
The solar cosmic ray event of 5-12 February 1965 is the most intense one of a ten month period of interplanetary observation (28 November 1964 - 30 September 1965) with Mariner 4 during the recent epoch of minimum solar activity. A full time history of the intensities of energetic particles is presented from onset at 1835 + or - 10 U.T. on 5 February following a 2(+) solar flare N08, W25 (which began at 1750 U.T.) until disappearance into the background near the end of 12 February. A mixture of low energy protons E sub p > 0.5 MeV and electrons E sub e > keV is identified in this event for the first time.
