ANTENNA MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR RADAR CALIBRATION.
Abstract
An investigation of the error in azimuth and elevation measurements made with a space tracking radar due to structural distortion of the antenna reflecting surface, the feed horns, and the Cassegrain subreflector was performed. Measurements of real-time distortions were made on the RADC 60-foot wide band tracking radar using a Geometric Measuring System (GMS), the basic components of which were laser-beam motion detectors. Results showed that both the primary parabola and the subreflector suffered angular distortions of approximately 150 arc seconds. The correlation of primary surface deflection with elevation remained within 10 arc seconds over a traverse of 70 degrees. Various parts of the radar complex suffered distortions which, while relatively well-defined functions of antenna position in a given environment, were fairly independent of each other. The net tracking error is a function of all of these distortions. (Author)
