GAS-METAL REACTION KINETICS BY PULSED BEAM-MASS SPECTROMETRY.

Abstract

Progress in the development and application of a modulated molecular beam-mass spectrometric apparatus for the study of kinetics of reactions between gases and refractory structural materials is summarized. The reaction between tungsten and oxygen had been studied, with particular attention being focused on those reaction products whose desorption curves are multi-exponential in character. This includes both the tungsten oxides WO2 and WO3 and atomic oxygen at high surface coverages. Results are presented and some indicated improvements in the apparatus are discussed. Results of a metallographic examination of some used tungsten targets are also presented. (Author)
