DEVELOPMENT OF PRODUCTION METHODS FOR GENERATING ASPHERIC LENS SURFACES. VOLUME I.

Abstract

The objective of this program was to develop a production method for manufacturing precision aspheric lens surfaces, in reasonable quantities and at a reasonable cost, without recourse to highly skilled craftsmanship. An investigation of several possible production methods and techniques culminated in the decision that the problem could best be solved with an electrically-controlled cutting machine which combined precision with flexibility and repeatability. Because of the critical tolerances involved, such a cutting machine must, of necessity, be an extremely accurate measuring device as well. (Author)
