ON-BOARD IN-FLIGHT CHECKOUT.

Abstract

This study projects the application of on-board in-flight checkout (OBIFCO) techniques to fighter, bomber, and transport type aircraft in the 1968-1975 time period. The hardware, data analysis, and programming requirements are analyzed for an OBIFCO which monitors the propulsion, avionics, and airframe utility system. The major conclusion of the study is that the hardware technology for OBIFCO exists today, but the data analysis techniques for the propulsion system and the airframe utility subsystems require additional R and D effort. This need is highlighted in the propulsion area where most of the current OBIFCO related programs are concentrating their efforts. To date, they have met with little success in detecting, diagnosing, or predicting engine failures. (Author)
