A PREVIEW OF NEWLY CONSTRUCTED SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE CHARTS OF THE PACIFIC, ATLANTIC, AND INDIAN OCEANS.

Abstract

The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office is currently engaged in preparing Oceanographic Atlases of the various oceans. For inclusion in these atlases monthly maximum, minimum, and mean sea surface temperature charts of the Pacific (south to 20 deg S.) the Atlantic (south to 10 deg S.), and the Indian (south to 55 deg S.) Oceans have been analyzed on a 1 deg quadrangle grid. These analyses are based on mechanically plotted data charts derived from punch cards of marine decks. These marine decks are compilations of injection temperature reports from merchant and naval vessels. The data collected are so numerous that the addition of new data probably will not greatly change the analysis. (This IM was presented as a paper at the Eleventh Pacific Science Congress in Tokyo, Japan, September 1966.) (Author)
