SHORT PULSE MODEL MEASUREMENT STUDIES.

Abstract

The design of a high range resolution radar cross-section range and the measurement data which were taken are described in this report. The radar system is capable of both amplitude and phase measurements at X-band frequencies. Range resolution is less than six-inches, and the phase accuracy is approximately two degrees rms. The radar cross-section range incorporates in the vicinity of the model a 12-foot diameter dielectric lens which corrects for phase-front curvature at the model. By utilizing the dielectric lens, the one-kilowatt radar system which is operated at 100-foot range can obtain accurate data on a 10-foot model. The quadrature phase data and the positions of the 3 axes of the rotator are recorded on a high-speed digital recorder. Measurements were performed on models of sphere-cones, cylinders, and aircraft.
