MOMENTUM EXCHANGE ACQUISITION SYSTEM.

Abstract

A program was conducted to design and fabricate a momentum exchange acquisition system which would operate successfully with the orientation and control system breadboard model previously fabricated. The basic approach was to supply two sets of contrarotating flywheels in the elevation and azimuth axes of the breadboard model, and then utilize an electro-mechanical brake to stop one of the flywheels. Momentum from that braked flywheel is used to begin rotation of the platform toward the required correction. The second flywheel is then braked to stop platform motion at the required correction. Electronic circuitry is supplied for flywheel and brake actuation, and logic is arranged for azimuth correction to be completed before elevation correction is begun. An analog computer study was made to predict the performance of the design, and the unit was fabricated and tested. Test results show that all design goals were met and exceeded. The conclusion is that the momentum exchange acquisition system is a feasible and attractive method of solar acquisition for solar power systems. (Author)
