A STUDY OF TUNGSTEN ALLOYS FOR ROCKET NOZZLES.
Abstract
Cast and extruded tungsten and various cast and extruded tungsten alloys were studied for suitability as rocket nozzles under severe operating conditions, including restart. The effects of the principal variables including alloy additions, carbon content, grain size, mechanical working and heat treatment on the properties were studied. The study techniques included microscopy, fractography, transmission electron microscopy, electron reflection microscopy, instrumented bend tests, microstrain tests, and rocket motor tests. A correlation of these variables with properties and nozzle performance was obtained. A cast tungsten-0.15% hafnium alloy was relatively unaffected by three repetitive nozzle firings under severe test conditions. (Author)
