RUBIDIUM MASER IMPROVEMENT.

Abstract

The object of the present study is to obtain a better understanding of the physical principles involved in the rubidium maser. The object is also to arrive at a practical design of an atomic oscillator with a short term stability better than that attained in other instruments. The maser used for the study was of the cell type and was studied under both continuous and transient operating conditions. In this report a theory is derived for these two modes of operation and is compared to the experimental results. In particular a technique is described in which the spin exchange cross section for rubidium collisions is measured without the necessity of measuring the atomic density. The value found is 2.02 + or - 0.20 x 10 to the -14th power sq. cm. and is in agreement with the value found by other experimenters using a different experimental technique. A power output over 10 to the -10th power watts was measured with the present maser configuration and was limited by cavity Q and light intensity. Improved cavity and bulb designs are described.
