MILLIMETER AND SUBMILLIMETER DEVICE RESEARCH.

Abstract

The observation of the hyperfine structure of a rotational transition of hydrogen sulfide has been performed with an accuracy of 2 parts in 10 to the 10th power. The structure is fully resolved into six hyperfine components by use of the Ramsey method of separated fields in an electric resonance molecular beam apparatus. The electric resonance device has been employed as a frequency control system, and initial comparison of this system with a rubidium standard has been made. Molecular beam investigations have revealed several line shifts and distortions; the importance of these effects to frequency control work is discussed. Stark measurements in H2S at 216.7 GHz, and observation of the electric resonance of the transition for H2S at 300.5 GHz are reported.
