BRUSHLESS DC STARTER-GENERATOR.

Abstract

The problem areas associated with predicting the torque speed characteristics of this brushless motor concept were resolved. The origin of the machine's commutating reactance was investigated and adequate design control over its magnitude was established. The quality of DC output power as affected by choice of rectification circuit and commutating inductance was analyzed and appropriate conclusions were derived from this study. The study of the thyristor commutator operating in the natural mode of commutation was completed during this reporting period. A more rugged and reliable shaft position sensing method was developed utilizing variable reluctance principle with high frequency carrier excitation. A study of DC current sensing techniques was completed. It included evaluation of low inductance shunts, Hall generators, and Mistors. The Mistor was found to be the most satisfactory as the DC current sensing device for this program. It was used in DC current limiter or chopper circuit evaluated during this quarter. The transistor DC switch evaluation was completed for STC 2500, 150 ampere, NPN, Silicon device, and results included herein. The unit was tested dynamically as a current limiter or DC current chopper with brush type and LSi/PED brushless type DC motors. (Author)
