PROCESS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM NITROSO RUBBER TERPOLYMER.

Abstract

Process development studies were conducted on the preparation of the monomers, trifluoronitrosomethane and 4-nitrosoperfluorobutyric acid, and the terpolymer, trifluoronitrosomethane/tetrafluoroethylene/4-nitrosoperfluorobutyric acid. The trifluoronitrosomethane process was carried to the pilot plant and 173.5 pounds of this monomer was produced in 13 batches. The nitroso/acid preparation, a five-step synthesis, was continued in the laboratory and a total of 8.59 pounds was produced in batches of 100 g or less. The process developed for the terpolymerization was a solution-precipitation polymerization utilizing methylene chloride as solvent. Using this process terpolymer of 1-2 mole % acid content was produced in the pilot plant in 30-40 pound batches. Eight batches for a total of 255.9 pounds of terpolymer were produced. (Author)
