PHOTOIONIZATION AND ABSORPTION COEFFICIENTS OF NO IN THE 600 - 950A REGION.

Abstract

Absolute photoionization and absorption coefficients of nitric oxide gas have been measured in the 600 - 950A region using a 1-meter Seya-Namioka scanning vacuum ultraviolet monochromator. The Hopfield helium continuum background source was used with photoelectric detection of the dispersed light. Numerous peaks in both the photoionization and absorption spectra were observed at wavelengths that agree well with those of a higher photographic spectrum. Underlying continua were separated into the ionization and dissociation continua, and the efficiencies for preionization were estimated for those bands previously identified. Weak fluorescence was observed when the wavelength of the incident light was shorter than 677.4 A. The wavelength of the emitted radiation was found to fall between the cutoff of LiF and quartz.
