INVESTIGATION OF MAINTENANCE-FREE, HIGH RATE, NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES FOR AIRCRAFT APPLICATION.

Abstract

Ampere-hour capacity outputs have been determined on a 22 Ah battery at discharge rates of 22 A to 600 A, at 75 F and at -40 F. 100 A charging was carried out at 32 F to 120 F to measure end of charge battery parameters. Oxygen pressure decay rates were measured at 75 F, 0 F, and -40 F. The Cd/Cd(OH)2 coulometer was charge-discharge cycled at 75 F and at -40 F. Boost modules were assembled and operated, controlling output current as a function of bus voltage and battery temperature. Temperature compensating circuits have been designed and tested. The logic circuit was breadboarded and tested for the following design features: temperature correction and componesation; battery to bus connection; Adhydrode amplifier; power cutoff; interrogation and low drain circuits.
