POLYBENZIMIDAZOLES AND OTHER AROMATIC HETEROCYCLIC POLYMERS FOR HIGH-TEMPERATURE RESISTANT STRUCTURAL LAMINATES AND ADHESIVES.
Abstract
The objective of this program is to study the feasibility of fabricating useful composites based on heterocyclic polymers and to evaluate their thermal and oxidative resistance at elevated temperatures. Optimization studies on PBI prefinishes on adhesive tapes. A polymerization study was completed on the N-phenyl PBI system from 3-amino-4-anilinobenzonitrile hydrochloride. Complete evaluations of the two similar N-phenyl PBI polymers, from diphenyl isophthalate with 3,3'-dianilinobenzidine and 3,3'-diamino-4,4'-dianilinobiphenyl, were carried out. Other N-phenyl PBI systems studied were those prepared from diphenyl-4,4'-benzophenone dicarboxylate with 3,3'-dianilinobenzidine, Phthalic anydride with 3,3'-diamino-4,4'-dianilinobiphenyl, and diphenyl terephthalate with 3,3'-diamino-4,4'-dianilinobiphenyl. Work was initiated on a new thermally stable system, polybenzimidazo(1,2-c)quinazoline. An evaluation was made on the polymer prepared from 2,2'-bis(o-aminophenyl)-5,5'-bibenzimidazole and diphenyl isophthalate. Work was initiated on the polymer from 2,2'-bis(o-amino-phenyl)-5,5'-bibenzimidazole and diphenyl-4,4'-benzophenone dicarboxylate. The polymer and laminate properties were studied on BBB polymers that were prepared from prepolymer from 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid or its dianhydride and 3,3'-diaminobenzidine in a number of solvents. A study of the melt route to the BBB polymer was also initiated by the polymerization of tetramethyl-1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylate with 3,3'-diaminobenzidine. (Author)
