OPTIMUM ALLOCATION OF COMMUNICATION SATELLITE RESOURCES.

Abstract

This report covers an investigation of methods for optimizing the operation of a communications network which uses a single, hard-limiting, multiple access satellite as a relay on all links, and which may use either frequency division, time division or spread spectrum multiple access techniques. Alternative methods based on dynamic programing techniques and on Lagrange multiplier analysis have been developed for each multiple access technique, and have been programmed in Fortran IV. A description and card listing of these programs is included as an appendix to the report. Three alternative optimization criteria may be used with the programs developed, and a fourth payoff function may be derived from one of these. In addition, the report discusses application of the methods to comparison of network operation under different traffic loads, under changes in network configuration and discipline, with various orders of alphabet, and with various types of ground equipment. Numerical results of the application of the methods to sample networks are included throughout the text and a complete table of numberical results is given in a separately bound appendix. (Author)
