THE BRITISH COMPUTER SCENE, PART III, THE REGIONAL AND NATIONAL COMPUTER CENTRES.

Abstract

A survey of the British computer scene was undertaken in late 1966-early 1967. The purpose of the survey was to review the state of development of the British computer scene and to identify future trends. This report is third in a series. It describes the National and Regional Computing Centres conceived and sponsored by the British Government. The origins of the program through the efforts of the Flowers Committee are discussed, and British effort is compared with US university computer programs. The first report in this series is 'The Government Impact on the Computer Scene' (ONRL-21-67); the second is 'The British Computer Industry' (ONRL-27-67). Other reports in the series will cover university academic efforts in computer science and the management schools' use of computers.
