REPORT OF THE RBW COMMITTEE TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSIONS FOR RADIATION PROTECTION AND FOR RADIOLOGICAL UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS (1962) (BERICHT DES RBW-KOMITEES AN DIE INTERNATIONALEN KOMMISSION EN FUER STRAHLENSCHUTZ UND FUER RADIOLOGISCHE EINHEITEN UND MESSUNGEN EN (1962)).

Abstract

A study on the significance and application of the RBW (relative biological effectiveness) in radiation protection is presented. It represents a comprehensive survey of the theoretical basis and experimental data available. The origin of the present RBW value, specification of the radiation quality, experimental RBW data, generalizations from the experimental data, application to men, dependence of the RBW on the radiation energy, evaluation of the dose equivalent, RBW values for accidental radiation exposures and emergency radiation exposures, problems of acute radiation burden, and limits of the concept are discussed.
