PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT TEST OF CARTRIDGE, 152-MM, TP-T, XM411E3 (RESIDUE INVESTIGATION).
Abstract
A product improvement test (residue investigation) of the 152-mm, TP-T, Cartridge, XM411E3, was conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 20 January to 1 April 1967. The purpose of this test was to develop better test methods for the evaluation of the residue left from firing the 152-mm combustible cartridge case, XM157, and to apply these methods in the evaluation of the residue left by the 152-mm, TP-T ammunition, XM411E3. Results indicate that development work conducted on the combustible cartridge case has reduced the size of the residue left by cartridges subjected to temperature conditioning below a level considered objectionable. However, the residue of those rounds subjected to the 10-day humidity cycle is still, in part, considered above the objectionable limit. The incidence of burning residue of those rounds subjected to temperature conditioning was, under the test technique developed, about 8% over-all. The incidence was found to depend on the temperature at which the rounds were conditioned. The rounds subjected to humidity cycling also produced burning residue; the incidence rate for these was approximately 15%. (Author)
