INVESTIGATION OF A VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE PYROLYTIC GRAPHITE THERMOCOUPLE.

Abstract

A series of tests have been performed to generate fundamental experimental data on the thermoelectric properties of anisotropic pyrolytic graphite. The purpose of this effort was to develop a thermocouple with a temperature range of 3300 C (6000 F) for long periods of time with a low duty cycle capability of 3600 C (6500 F). A number of test thermocouples of pure pyrolytic graphite were developed with various junction geometrics. Calibration of this assembly was effected by utilizing an optical pyrometer sighted into a blackbody cavity in which the thermocouple was embedded. While several difficulties were encountered, some success in overcoming these was attained and suggestions for solutions to the remaining problems are discussed.
