EVALUATION OF BELL AEROSYSTEMS COMPANY HIP PACK (MODEL 2130).
Abstract
The Bell Aerosystems Company hip pack (Model 2130) was evaluated and compared with four other load-carrying devices -- the sling, rucksack, and packboard (all Army supply items), and the Everest Pak (a commercial item). Teams totaling 20 men used the five devices several days, carrying loads from 38 to 50 pounds over a 10-mile course that crossed varying terrain. Information used in the evaluation included performance rates and times required for loading, putting on, taking off, and unloading the carriers, subjective responses of the men, and the opinions of military observers. In a supplemental test, another 72 men carried 50-pound ammunition cans, using the hip pack or one of two other pieces of equipment selected from the main test. Everyone in a three-man team wore the same pack, and each pack was worn by eight teams. Team responses to simulated combat actions were timed, and the frequency of halts and pack adjustments were recorded by controllers accompanying the teams. (Author)
